Business skill: Phrasal verbs
In conversation, native speakers tend to use phrasal verbs in opposition to the more formal Latinate verb. A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and a preposition with a different meaning from the original main verb. Instead of saying "I’ll arrange a meeting," a native speaker might tend to say "I’ll set up a meeting."
Some compounds are used literally, like "She looked out of the window", which are easily understood. Others with figurative and idiomatic meaning, used in everyday speech, are far more difficult to understand. There are dictionaries listing thousands of phrasal verbs.
